The Rhythm Natives were invited to kick it with KUCI’s Open Session Radio and were asked to do an “on air” acoustic set, interview, freestyle instumentation and spit rhymes on 10/27/08.
We arrived in UC Irvine about 30 minutes before the 10pm showtime and had to figure out how to fit everybody in the cramp studio space and get the maximum out of our gear. We managed to fit comfortably, hook the acoustic/electric bass and guitar with Chezzy Chez’s keyboard to a 12-channel mixboard and plugged it into the station’s input receiver, mic Bojo’s conga drum and shared 2 vocal microphones amongsts JRA (radio host), Sekon, KreativeThought, Myself and Jenn K who sings the chorus on our new joint entitled “Holding it Down” while the Open Session crew filmed and snapped pictures. Damm, that was a long sentence…
It was quite a drive for the rest of the guys coming from the San Fernando Valley to the radio station in Irvine, but this opportunity was not to be missed.
Shouts to the fam that rolled with us…WelliWells, Bertaxx, Timmy and Jenn. Once again, peace to the whole Open Session crew for supporting the Rhythm Natives. We will be back!!!

Its goin to be a busy one for us this week. During the course of the week, we will be in the studio finishing up 2 new songs, re-invent the set for each of the 3 shows that we have coming up on Friday- Monday and constantly create new joints to stack for the LP we are finishing up.
Friday, 10/24/08 we are going to be at SoulSessions . If you haven’t been to this downtown L.A. staple on a Friday night, you are missing out. It happens every 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month with rotating dj’s and bi-weekly special guests. Along with our homeboys The Committee, we will be celebratring Revision’s (emcee/TheCommittee) Forward Progress Mixtape Release Party. DJ Phoreyez will no doubt rock the spot upstairs and yours truly will be blessing the lower level. Oh yeah, $2 margaritas for the senioritas.
Sat. 10/25/08 at the BeatRock Flagship Store Opening.
As posted in the previous blog, Dave and the crew will open the long awaited flagship store in Long Beach, CA. This helps distribution easier for the local cornisseurs. From a wide range of visual artists to hiphop performances, this event will be memorable.
Monday evening, 10/27/08 we go live on air at Open Session Radio 88.9fm. For some reason, I’m really excited about this one. The good folks at Open Session Radio asked the Rhythm Natives if we were interested in visiting them at the studio to do a live performance and interview. You can’t turn an offer like this dowwwwwn. We are going to have to figure out how to fit our instruments and gear into their space, acoustic set anyone? Catch us live from 10pm to 12am, be sure to tune in or stream it live on www.kuci.org

In the late 80’s, I started 3rd grade in California as a transplant from the Philippines. My family settled in Koreatown, Los Angeles (3rd/Harvard) and their first priority was to get my big brother and I enrolled in school as soon as possible. Most of the elementary schools around the area were crowded, so like most inner city kids, my brother and I rode the school bus for 45-60 minutes each way to attend schools in the San Fernando Valley.
For most of my elementary/middle school years, I was exposed to after school programs. Most of them were sports related such as basketball, softball, and kickball, but sometimes I stayed just to hang out with friends until I have to catch the after school bus at 5:30 p.m. to take me back home to L.A.
Looking back, I don’t remember being exposed to any after school Art programs, maaan that’s fuucked up!!!
Thank god for people like Bob Bates. Bob, the co-founder of nonprofit education orgnization Inner-City Arts received a message from a spiritual voice while meditating some 20 years ago, followed that path, and helped start the arts program for the youths them.
Fast forward to 2008 and Bates is still teaching children how to paint, sculpt and think creatively. Last week Inner-City Arts celebrated the completion of a $10 million expansion. The organization serves 8,000 students a year, but by expanding they will double the numbers.
The organization’s goal is to “Empower children to succeed in all walks of life”. Full minds and academic achievements, thats whats up! Keep on.
opening celebration..
